The
Corporate Environmental Governance Programme (CEGP) at the
University of Hong Kong announces that it is to hold a one
day Postgraduate Research Workshop on the 7th November 2004
to coincide with the Greening of Industry Conference 2004:
Hong Kong scheduled for the 7th - 10th November 2004.
The
workshop will offer postgraduate students from around the
world a unique opportunity to present, discuss and receive
feedback on their research in an international setting. The
focus of the workshop will be on various challenges that are
encountered by research students in new and increasingly significant
academic fields such as environmental management, sustainable
development and related areas. The workshop is designed to
be interactive and roundtable orientated and will be comprised
of presentations by internationally experienced academics,
short presentations by attending postgraduate students on
their research and concluding panel discussions.
Due
to the interdisciplinary nature of sustainable development,
students from any academic fields are encouraged to participate.
This may include postgraduates from business and management
studies, geography, law and policy studies, engineering and
technology, social sciences, humanities, urban studies and
others.

| Participation
and Registration |
|
|
|
As
the workshop forms part of the Greening of Industry Conference,
the event is included in the price of the conference registration
fee. Students are encouraged to register for the conference;
however this requires payment of the conference registration
fee. The deadline for submission is the same for both the
workshop and the conference. Please refer to the conference
website for further details. For those not attending the Greening
of Industry Conference, the cost of registration for the workshop
only is HK$300 (lunch not included). This special rate has
been arranged in order to encourage local and regional students
to participate in the workshop without having to register
for the conference itself.

| Submission
of Abstracts |
|
|
Interested
students are invited to submit an abstract of 100-200 words
on or before 2 April 2004 that describes a particular aspect
of their postgraduate research. Students are asked to select
from the following list the programme session to which their
abstracts most accurately relate:
-
Postgraduate research: the challenges and rewards of a
new and interdisciplinary academic field
-
Geographical and cultural differences in research studies
-
Problems with emerging research methodologies related
to sustainable development research
The
postgraduate presenters will be selected from the submitted
abstracts and will be invited to participate by the workshop
committee on 2 June 2004.

|
6
- 8 student speakers will be selected amongst the submitted
abstracts to present their papers at one of the three workshop
sessions. It is therefore important that students indicate
which session theme their submissions most accurately relate
to (see previous section Submission of Abstracts).
|
| |
|
The
paper should consider a particular aspect of the postgraduate
research which the student has undertaken, where challenges
were faced due to the new and interdisciplinary nature of
the field, geographical/cultural aspects of the study or methodological
issues. It is therefore not necessary to present all aspects
of research conducted towards the student's thesis. Instead,
the paper should highlight the nature of the research challenge,
why the student encounteredthis challenge and how it was resolved
(if at all).
|
| |
|
Authors
are asked to remember that the workshop aims to be a learning
experience; therefore research which did not have a positive
or intended outcome is equally important to this workshop.
Do not be afraid to submit papers on failed aspects of your
postgraduate research as others may learn from your experiences.

| Submission
of Full Papers |

|
Full

in the workshop book. The papers should be submitted electronically
through the conference web portal through the "Proposal

a paper of 2,000 - 3,000 words.
