Workshop
on Corporate Responsibility for Environmental Performance
Asian Development
Bank
Hong
Kong, China, 8 November 2004
|
| |
|
Can
companies in the Asia-Pacific region lead the way to an environmentally
sound and sustainable future? Does the increasing emphasis
on improved environmental performance open up new business
opportunities? Will emerging technologies render old environmental
concerns obsolete?
|
| |
|
These
and other critical issues will be the subject of an investigative
report being prepared by the Asian Development Bank (ADB)
for its second Asian Environment Outlook (AEO), which will
focus on corporate responsibility for environmental performance
in Asia and the Pacific. At a workshop to be held in Hong
Kong, China on 8 November 2004, in conjunction with the four-day
Greening of Industry Network 2004 Conference, the authors
of the AEO will deliver their initial findings and seek feedback
from a wide range of stakeholders.
|
| |
|
The
content of the report will cover external pressures that are
driving Asia-Pacific's firms towards greater attention to
environmental issues, the implications of moving towards compliance
with government regulations and standards, the prospects of
new business opportunities in the emerging environmental goods
and services market, the probability of new technologies making
old environmental concerns obsolete, and the role of governments
and other institutions in creating an enabling environment
for corporations to take up their responsibilities for improved
environmental performance.
|
| |
|
Inputs
from the workshop participants will be incorporated in the
final AEO 2005 report, which will be presented to the Ministerial
Conference on Environment and Development in the Republic
of Korea in March 2005. A similar workshop will be held in
Amsterdam on 26 October 2004.
|
| |
|
At
the Hong Kong workshop, two of the AEO's principal authors
will present their findings:
|
| |
|
Dr.
David Annandale, Head, School of Environmental Science,
Murdoch University: Why Asia's Corporations Should Improve
Environmental Performance
|
| |
|
Mr.
Albert Fry, Program Manager, World Business Council for
Sustainable Development: What Emerging Opportunities Does
the Environment Offer Asia's Corporations?
|
| |
|
An
open discussion will follow the brief presentation of the
authors. Panel members will include Dr. Annandale, Mr. Fry,
Dr. Peter King (ADB) and Dr. David McCauley (ADB). Mr. Jan
van Heeswijk, Director-General of the Regional and Sustainable
Development Department, ADB, will be the moderator.
|
| |
|
The
workshop will be held at Room 309-310 at the Hong Kong Convention
and Exhibition Centre, 11:00a.m. to 12:30p.m. Lunch hosted
by ADB follows.
